| POP3 Settings Screen (incoming mail) |
This screen is where you enter details of your POP3 (incoming) mail server and account settings. (NOTE: All versions of EFS collect mail from a single Pop3 account. If you run multiple domains, ask your ISP to consolidate them to all go to that single Pop3 account then add the additional domains to the Domains tab in EFS) EFS has no dialup feature so connecting direct via a firewall is preferred. Alternately, you can enable the Pre Check option (ADVANCED VERSION ONLY) to either run a specific file or ping a router to kick off a connection. POP3 Server - The address of your Internet Providers inbound (Pop3) mail server. This name should be provided to you by your Internet provider and is generally in the format "pop3.isp.com". Ensure you are running DNS so that the DNS server can resolve this name to an IP address. You can test this by clicking the IP button. Username - The Internet account or username supplied by your Internet Provider. This is effectively the mailbox where mail is stored at your ISP. Port - 110 (default) The TCP port number that Pop3 connects on. It is unlikely that you will need to change this number.Password ******* (the password required for 'username' to log into pop3.isp.com) Timeout - 60 (default) The time in seconds EFS will wait for the Pop3 mail server to answer a "call" from EFS. Leave mail on host - This is for testing purposes only. If you are unsure whether you have setup EFS correctly, you can temporarily enable this setting to ensure you do not accidentally lose mail. Essentially, any downloaded email is NOT removed from the POP server. EFS knows if the mail has previously been downloaded. POP3 Messages Before Send Initiated - This is the number of Pop3 (inbound) messages that are downloaded before EFS kicks off a Send. This setting essentially speeds up mail delivery when there are a number of messages in the Pop3 queue. Enter a number between 5 and 20 (Note that this field will be greyed out if SMTP forwarding is disabled) Strip POP3 Account Prefix (ADVANCED VERSION ONLY) - Select this option if your ISP's Mail Server prefixes your email addresses with your account name (or some other custom text). For example, if a message was sent to <user@mydomain.com> but when your ISP's Mail server received it, they prefix it with "mydomain-" (thus the email address becomes <mydomain-user@mydomain.com> then selecting this option effectively tells EFS to strip this name off the email address before sending it. Message Activity Monitor - Default/Recommended: Enabled. Gives the option to disable if needed - when enabled, EFS monitors the activity of each Pop3 message being retrieved, and drops the connection if no data is retrieved within a specific time period. This is separate to the Pop3 timeout, where the connection is dropped if there is no response from the Pop3 server after the timeout specified. The default values, if this is enabled, are based on the Pop3 Timeout value and are as follows: Pop3 timeout > 60 seconds, message timer = 60 seconds. Pop3 timeout >= 30 seconds, message timer = 30 seconds. Pop3 Timeout <= 5 seconds, message timer = 5 seconds. Pop3 timer > 5 and < 30 seconds, message timer = Pop3 Timeout value Max download - (ADVANCED VERSION ONLY) This is handy if a sender forgets to abide by "email ethics" by sending a large file by email! In general, a single email message should be kept to a maximum of 2Mb in size unless it is known the connection at both ends is reliable enough to up/download. Larger files should be split up over several messages by compressing the file over multiple volumes. You can toggle between MB and KB by clicking the Mb button. NOTE: If you have a slow Internet connection or want to limit the size of incoming messages, set this size (in "Mb" or "Kb") to the largest email message EFS should download. If an email message is over this size, then only the header of the message is downloaded and a warning message is appended to the body before it is sent. There is a known problem with EFS on Windows 9x machines (due to limitations in the operating system) where EFS may fail with email messages over 6 or 7Mb in size. In this case, you should register the Advanced version and set a maximum size of 6Mb OR run EFS on Windows NT or higher. |
